When an AI Answer Sounds Certain, Check This

An AI tool gives you a confident answer, complete with a tidy explanation and a source link. Before you rely on it, pause at the part that matters most: the claim you would be embarrassed to repeat if it turned out to be wrong. The goal isn’t to distrust every answer; it’s to know when to look closer.

Find the checkable claim

Ask the tool to separate its main claims from its explanation. A statement such as “this setting is available in the app” is easier to check than a broad summary like “this is the best way to protect your account.” For anything time-sensitive—software features, rules, or current events—check when the information was published and whether it applies to your version or situation.

Follow the source trail

Treat a citation as a lead, not proof. Open the page and confirm that it exists, supports the specific claim, and comes from a source with relevant expertise, such as official product documentation for a product feature. If the link is missing, broken, or only loosely related, search for the claim directly instead of repeating the citation.

Use a second route

For a decision with real consequences, compare the answer with an independent, reliable source. Asking the same AI tool to repeat itself in different words isn’t an independent check. For a low-stakes question, a quick verification may be enough; for health, legal, financial, or safety questions, use qualified sources and people rather than treating a chatbot as the final authority.
